THE ORDER OF
THE SECRET MONITOR
(Known as The
Friendly Order of David and Jonathan)
GOLD COAST
CONCLAVE No 10
In the late
1960’s Ernie Cairns, who later became the Grand Supreme Ruler of Qld,
and Sep Newberry who had retired to the Gold Coast from Sydney, with the
aim of establishing a Conclave on the Gold Coast, assembled a group of
local brethren who joined the Stephens Conclave of Secret Monitors. At
this time the Stephens Conclave met in a small high set building
situated in the Brisbane suburb of Yeronga. The meeting room was
upstairs and the Festive Board was in a rather fresh open area
downstairs.
Having
gathered sufficient numbers to submit a successful petition, the Gold
Coast Conclave of the Order of the Secret Monitor was consecrated in the
Coolangatta Masonic Centre on 15 August 1970 by the Most Worthy Grand
Supreme Ruler, Most Worthy Bro Frank Roberts; the foundation Supreme
Ruler of the Gold Coast Conclave being Worthy Bro Sep Newberry. Two
foundation members John Laing and Ross Spark, both residing in the
Ipswich area, are still members in 2007. Another early member was C H
(Harry) Green, who also remains a member and is a long serving member of
the Burleigh Lodge. Harry provided the background information for this
potted history.
In the 1970’s,
the Coolangatta Centre consisted of two former army huts situated
halfway up the hill in Lanham St. This building was sold in about 1974
and the Coolangatta Lodge moved into the Tweed Heads centre, using some
of the money from the Coolangatta sale to refurbish and extend that
building. Naturally the Gold Coast Conclave also moved to Tweed Heads
where it met until 1976, when it was required to move back into
Queensland.
As a result of
that edict, the Gold Coast Conclave then moved to Burleigh Heads and
began meeting on the third Friday of each month; this being the
alternate month to Stephens Conclave meetings. Most of the Gold Coast
members having remained members of Stephens Conclave, the two Conclaves
attended each others meetings at Burleigh and Stephens, which retains
the third Friday as it’s meeting night but now meets at Stones Corner.
In the late
1980’s due to diminishing attendance numbers, the Gold Coast Conclave
changed it’s regular meetings to become a Daylight Conclave, meeting on
the fourth Wednesday of alternate months at 10.00am. Like many other
Orders the numbers have fluctuated, but the decision to change to
daylight meetings ensured that the Conclave remains active and continues
to attract members who wish to extend their Masonic knowledge into other
areas.
